During the COVID-19 lockdown, we faced a difficult season of being at home all of the time. For families, this meant lots of pajama time, board games, neighborhood walks and home schooling.
I decided to raise money through a donations-only photo shoot for Urban Recipe, a local Atlanta organization that sends fresh produce and shelf stable pantry items home to families in need. They always give 75 pounds of food per family. During the pandemic, their volume increased tremendously.
As soon as I heard that our economy would shut down, I knew I needed to help out. So, I created a schedule for FREE front porch sessions. I only asked that families donate as much as they chose to Urban Recipe. The end result was a total of 200 family ‘porchtrait’ sessions and $15,000.00 raised!
I have to say, too, that amid the negative effects of the crisis, any families reported some silver linings:
- More significant and intentional talk time with their children
- Better connections, conversations with their kids
- More thankfulness for the little things like baked cookies, walks and board games

I am thankful to be able to use my camera in a volunteer capacity and I have so enjoyed meeting all of the amazing families!
And, of course, I am grateful for all of the donations to Urban Recipe,.
